The town sits on the east side of Charleston Harbor and along the tidal Wando River, across the Cooper River from the peninsula. The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, which opened in 2005, carries US 17 between the two. The town limits run a long way northeast along that highway, so a drive from one end to the other takes real time. If you are comparing trainers, ask where lessons would happen before you book.
The Old Village, the town's oldest neighborhood, is centered on Pitt Street and has older homes, small shops and sidewalks that fill up on weekends. It is a good place to practice a loose leash and polite greetings once a dog can handle quiet streets. Shem Creek is another busy waterfront spot with boats, birds and food smells. Dogs that grab dropped snacks benefit from a reliable leave it cue, which a private lesson can build.
For off-leash exercise, Palmetto Islands County Park has a dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs. The county page says it is closed until 9 a.m. each Tuesday for routine maintenance. Before using any dog park, make sure your dog comes when called and is relaxed around new dogs. The town also voted in 2022 to let leashed dogs into the Hardscrabble Wilderness Area as a pilot, on a leash no longer than six feet. Check current rules before you go.
Summers are humid and sticky, and a dog who has been running in the afternoon can overheat fast. Carry water, choose shade and watch for heavy panting. Walks along marsh edges can also tempt dogs toward pluff mud and wildlife. A dog with a solid recall and a calm wait at car doors is easier to take on these outings. General estimates for a behavior-focused program run about $600 to $1,800.

Good questions
Before you begin.
Is there a dog park in Mount Pleasant?

Are dogs allowed in the Hardscrabble Wilderness Area?
In 2022 the town board approved a pilot allowing dogs on a leash of six feet or less. Confirm the current rule with the town before visiting.
What do I do about a dog who pulls near Shem Creek?
Practice on quieter streets first, then add boats, bikes and people one at a time. Short daily sessions work better than one long walk.
How far is Mount Pleasant from downtown Charleston?
They are across the Cooper River from each other and linked by the Ravenel Bridge on US 17. Ask any trainer about travel before scheduling.
