The island lies along the Atlantic, with the Intracoastal Waterway between it and the mainland, and Breach Inlet separating it from Sullivan's Island. It is a narrow strip that hugs the beach, so almost every street is a short walk from the sand. A connector road from Mount Pleasant brings most visitors and residents. Because space is tight and traffic is steady, leash manners on the road and at crosswalks are a daily need.
The city's page lists off-leash windows for dogs on the beach. From April 1 through September 14 the window is 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., and from September 15 through March 31 it is 4 p.m. to 10 a.m. Owners must keep a leash in hand, keep the dog under voice command and clean up. At all other times dogs must be leashed and in control, even in the water. Check the city page for any change.
Voice command is a skill that takes practice, not just hope. Start in a quiet yard with a recall cue and a high-value treat, then add distance, then distractions, then a long line on the beach. A private lesson plan, with general estimates of about $75 to $150 per lesson, can build that step by step. Dogs that ignore gulls and other dogs are safer when the beach is busy.
Isle of Palms County Park is run by the county park commission, and its rules say pets must be kept on a leash, cleaned up after and under control, and not left in vehicles. Hot cars are a serious danger here. Wild Dunes, a large private community at the northeast end, has its own rules, so check before bringing a dog. Behavior programs for dogs who bark or lunge at other beachgoers generally range from $600 to $1,800.

What if my dog does not come when called?
